Robin Oeming, a senior environmental quality analyst for the Department of Natural Resources and Environment’s Bay City office said the Michigan Public Service Commission estimates that 4 percent of the 4.5 million households in Michigan, about 180,000 homes, are using heating oil in various size tanks both above and below the ground. The Michigan Petroleum Association puts the number closer to 6.8 percent of the population, or more than 300,000 households.
